Welcome to the Primary 2 Learning Area!

We hope that the page can be used to share some of the fantastic work completed by our very talented Primary 2 children.  

Below is a selection of literacy and numeracy learning intentions. We hope that you will find them useful when supporting your child at home.

Literacy

Literacy

  • Sounds Write - Up to Unit 7 (Initial Code)
  • Recognise the symbols and know the sounds that each symbol represents.
  • Blend sounds for reading the words in Units 1-7.
  • Listening and responding to a range of poems, rhymes and Spring/Easter stories
  • Genre: Persuasive Writing - to begin to be able to say that the features of a persuasive text,  manipulate the reader and have a title.
  • Develop increasing competence in the use of grammar and punctuation. Focus on capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
  • Using correct letter formation, sizing, orientation and recognition of lower and upper case letters
  • Writing simple sentences using their knowledge of sounds, but spelling some key words correctly.

Numeracy

Numeracy 

  • Count forwards/backwards from a given number.
  • Know the number 1/2 more than or less than a given number. 
  • Addition within 10 - Know number bonds up to the story of 8.
  • Subtract two numbers practically by taking away.
  • Read and write number names one to ten/eleven up to twenty.
  • Create simple repeating patterns.
  • Recognise and count coins in everyday use- 1p, 2p, 5p.
  • Know the names of the days of the week and sequence correctly.
  • Understand language associated with length e.g. longer than/shorter than, height.
  • Collect, organise and record data using a pictograph. 
  • To begin to understand and use mathematical language when talking about their work.
