We have planned a fun week for our last week of term. Everyone has been working so hard and we are very proud of you. Thursday: Make your own ‘Happy Jar’. (See folder) Write down your ideas on post-it’s or little slips of paper and pop them in your jar. It can be hard to think about what makes us happy. We think getting new things or presents will make us happy but generally it is the little things that make us smile the most. Think about when you last laughed or smiled. Was it to do with getting your sums right or talking to a friend? Miss Gillespie is happy when she doesn’t have to make the dinner.   • Use a calendar/ diary – say months of the year in order. Find your birthday on the calendar. What month is it in? What day is it on? What is the season? Find other special days on the calendar – Christmas, Halloween, mum’s birthday etc. (See Activity Cards in folder for more questions/ ideas.)
  • Copy out months of the year onto pieces of paper correctly, cut up and put in correct order.
  • Talk about the seasons and the differences between each one.
  • Match the months of the year to the correct season (see worksheets in folder – no need to print, copy answers/draw seasonal pictures on a page).
  • Extension – try to spell the months of the year correctly, check your spellings with a calendar.

Look in the play folder for ideas of how to make a card for a special person in your life to celebrate Father's Day.

Outdoor & Water Fun

  • See folder for different activity ideas. One idea is to build a kite.
  • Wet Sponge Bull’s Eye – Draw a Bull’s eye on the ground outside with chalk. Assign points for each circle. Draw a starting line and throw wet sponges at the target.
  • Freeze your prize: Place small toys like action figures, LOL dolls or cars in a small sandwich bags/ice cube trays filled with water and freeze. Give them out as rewards. Investigate how quickly they melt.

Tuesday: Why teach about syllables?
• Dividing words into parts, or "chunks" helps speed the process of decoding.
• Knowing the rules for syllable division can children read words more accurately and fluently.
• Understanding syllables can also help children learn to spell words correctly.
• Read the clapping syllable sheet for ideas about how to explain syllables to your child.
Read the syllable power-point together and count the syllables in each word.
• Go on a syllable hunt. Collect at least 10 objects. Sort the objects into groups with the same number of syllables. Alternatively see folder for sample grid and a list of pictures to sort.

Wednesday:Read the power-point to get ideas on how to write an acrostic poem.
Choose your topic and write your poem. See folder for summer word ideas. Use a dictionary to help.

You will need a measuring tape, a piece of card (use a cereal box or card board box) and cellotape or glue. Don’t worry if you don’t have a tape measure you can use a ruler, remember 100cm = 1metre. Help your child make their measuring instrument by joining pieces of card together (mark off 1metre/ 100cm accurately for your child). Use the measuring instrument to find 5 things shorter than 1 metre, 5 things about 1 metre and 5 things longer than 1 metre, draw or record answers on a page.  Estimating in metres - Estimate the length of 5 different things around your home in metres, now measure them. Record/ draw your answers on a page. How did you do?                                                                                                             Fun Activities: Find out - how many metres can you jump/ hop? Ask a family member to help you measure with your measuring instrument or use a tape measure. Have a competition with another family member, who can hop for 2 metres in the quickest time? Make up your own challenges.                  Extension:Look out for social distancing signs when you are out and about. Do you know how many metres apart everyone should try to keep?

Be inspired by summer and your surroundings - draw some wild flowers/ mini-beasts, draw a portrait of a family member, use your imagination and let it inspire your drawings - use your own drawing implements. Home Learning -Primary 3

Hello Everyone

We all have had our worlds turned upside down and we are most impressed with your commitment to continue learning and improving. We hope everyone has established a daily routine and are enjoying the online activities. Looking after our mental health is very important, so try and set time aside to talk about how we are feeling and ask your child about what activities they would like to do.

Remember you know your child best and how they learn, so play games together, draw, cook or read a book. Time is precious and Covid-19 has given us the gift of being together, although it will not always be easy. You want to be able to look back at this when it is all a distant memory and be glad that you have some happy memories.

We love seeing the different photos of all your activities from obstacle races in the garden to baking buns and model making, so keep them coming. We would also like to express our thanks to all parents for your continued support.

During this crisis we would like to set up a method of communication with parents. Below you will find the email address of your class teacher. Please email the relevant teacher with both the name of the parent contact and the child's name only. This will facilitate a group contact list to be created.

Reading: Continue to read your own books aloud to an adult or your favourite teddy, or find a suitable ebook from the Oxford Owl/ Amazon collection(see the links below).

Comprehension: Select one Superhero fact sheet, ‘Water Wonder Woman’ or ‘Lizard Lad’ and answer the differentiated questions on the sheet or your work jotter. (see literacy folder)

Spellings: Check spelling groups in folder, write out spellings each day and use in sentences orally or written. Weekly spelling test - orally or written

Phonics:
Picture Dictation: CVCC word maze. Look at the pictures and spell the words. Draw your pictures and play picture word snap. (see literacy folder)

Dictation- Parents read the sentences slowly. Children to write and spell independently.
The wind left dust on the mat. The ant will come in and sink in the soft dust. Sam will jump up and land on the desk. Sam must not just jump in the pond and get wet.


Verbs: Children quickly understand verbs that indicate ‘doing’ but they may not understand that ‘being’ words are also verbs.
• Verbs tell what someone, or something, is doing.
• Verbs are sometimes called ‘doing’ or ‘being’ words.
• ‘Being’ verbs tell us about our feelings.

Make a list or talk about ten different verbs you can do at home, e.g. to brush your teeth, play a game, watch the TV etc.
Verb Matching game – If you don’t have access to a printer then look at the pictures and say the verbs. Ext. Write the verbs and make up your own sentences. Underline the verbs used.

Mental Maths
• Recite doubles to 12 / 20. Parents test knowledge with quick fire near double questions. 6+7 or 10 + 11.
• Write out the numbers to 20 twice on card/paper back of a cereal box put each set into a sandwich bag/envelope. Keep in a safe place as we will use again. (See numeracy folder for number cards to 30)
• Pick a number from each bag and add quickly. Use knowledge of doubles and number facts to help you.
• Count back in 10’s, 5’s and 2’s starting at different numbers (93, 83 …), (see folder for a printable 100 square ) you will find 100 Squares to help on websites such as  Twinkl or Topmarks
• Play the game Buzz together for multiplies or 5 or 10. Example You count in 1’s and when it’s your turn to say a number and it’s a multiple of 5 you say buzz instead.(so 1,2,3,4,buzz, 6,7,8,9, buzz, 11,12,13,14,buzz etc

Doubles - Read the double plus one challenge cards, and work out the answers. (see numeracy folder)

Time: Go to Topmarks and play Telling The Time Game (This plays on phones and ipads the game is on page 2). You can set the ability level and whether 12 or 24 hour clock (for P3 set to the 12 hour clock times)Timehttps://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/116/telling-the-time

Read o 'clock, quarter past and half past on analogue and digital clocks. Ask children to read the time from clocks/ watches etc at home. Can they tell what time it will be in 1 or 2 more hours?

"If it is now half past 2, what time will it be in 1 more hour?"

Even better if you've got an old watch or clock at home ask your child to make different times, for example, "show me half past 3 on the watch".

Make a simple time line of their day at home - at half past 8 l eat my breakfast, at half past 10 l have a break - draw clocks and pictures on your time line.

Extra-Curricular 

Start to keep a 'My Home School Diary'.

Write or draw about at least three things you enjoyed doing at home this week.

Write or draw about things you didn't like doing this week.

At the end of this adventure it will be a lovely record of all your Home Schooling experiences. 

Try to keep fit and do some exercises every day either indoors or outdoors.

Design and make an obstacle course for either in  your home, garden or back yard.

Step 1: Plan out your course. Ask an adult to check over your plan to make sure it's safe to do.

Step 2: Gather all the things you need eg old blanket, ball, soft toys, sticks from the garden, etc.

Step3: Set up your obstacle course. 

Step 4: Have a practise using your course, make changes if you need to.

Step 5: Your obstacle course is ready!

Time yourself doing it or have a competition with someone in your house. Who's the winner? Make changes to it over the week, add in new challenges. Have fun!

Remember to check with an adult that you've made your obstacle course in a safe place at home. Don't forget to tidy away your obstacle course when you're finished because someone may trip over it! Set it up again another day or with little changes.

Some ideas for your course : balance a soft toy on your head, put out some cans and dribble a ball around them (no balls inside the house), use sticks in a line to make a ladder on the ground and jump over them, put water into old juice bottles to weigh them down, try knocking them over etc. Be creative and ask your family for ideas too.

If space is limited then you could always make up your own work out , for example: 10 star jumps, 10 hops on both legs, run on the spot as you count to 10 etc. Enjoy!
