Celebrating maths week in nursery

19th Oct 2018

This week was Maths week, and the nursery children had opportunities to develop aspects of their early mathematical development through our Halloween theme, and in particular 'spiders!' We were observing how many legs and eyes spiders have, comparing these to other mini beasts and learning about "big","medium",and "small", using spiders and pumpkins. The children sorted a range of mini beasts into sorting trays (using the number of legs as a criteria). The mini beasts were covered in foam and the children had to use tweezers to pick them out of the trays (also developing their fine motor skills)! We also had fun playing the Incy Wincy spider game. The children had to count the number of dots on the dice and then move the appropriate number of spaces. The children then decided to create their own spiders at the dough table. They used pipe cleaners for the legs and buttons/googly eyes to make eyes, again counting how many legs and eyes were needed. A fun week, learning all about spiders whilst also developing our counting, sorting and matching skills!
