Thought for the Day- The Mighty Oak

18th Jan 2019

As I drove to school this week I was drawn to an old oak tree I hadn't noticed before. It got me thinking about the life of the oak. Starting as a small acorn in a pot, with a little care and attention it begins its life as a small tree. When it's ready, this sapling is then planted somewhere where it will grow. During its life the tree changes and develops many hidden concentric rings. On some occasions it requires pruning, to stop it rotting. It then stands strong and tall, sheltering and protecting.

A busy week in Greenhaw saw the invitation of parents for our open day. We try as a school to convince prospective parents that we are the school for their child. As I watched my son in primary 1 speak so confidently about his feelings in front of 250 other children, I realised that the children at our school are our ambassadors.

I then thought about the parallels with the mighty oak. With a little love, care and nurturing the children develop just like that acorn. When they are ready they are placed in an environment they will thrive. Through our school they gain much more than an education, they gain memories just like the rings on the oak. Sometimes we may have to discipline them, just like the oak needs pruned. With the support of parents we can help shape them and keep them growing strong. As a teacher, I look forward to seeing the children stand strong, like the mighty oak, sheltering and protecting.
