To count forwards and backwards to 10 from different starting points.

 

 

 

 

Ideas to help at home :

Play : Pick a number game

Get your child to pick a number between 1 and 10. Practice counting forwards and backwards from that number.  Repeat using different numbers.  This is the perfect game as it can be played anywhere.

Sing – 5 little speckled frogs.

To become more familiar with the language of measure e.g. long/short, big/small, tallest/smallest

Ideas to help at home :

Compare sizes of different family members.

Get children to put their toys in order of smallest to biggest and vice versa.

When out driving ask your child to look out for big cars and small cars.

 
 

March

To be able to copy and continue a simple pattern using objects or pictures.

Point out patterns in everyday clothing and objects at home.

Help your child to make 2, 3 or 4 step patterns with objects like pegs, socks, cutlery and cups.

Encourage your child to make colour patterns with lego and blocks at home.

 
 

April

To begin to understand and use the language associated with weight.

 

To be able to compare and talk about the weight of two objects.

Ideas to help at home :

Let your child become familiar with different scales in your home e.g. weighing scales for cooking.

 

Talk about what happens to the scales when different weights are put on them.

 

Give them two different objects which vary in weight and ask them to use their hands as scales.

To be able to understand the concept of simple addition.

 

To begin to understand the language associated with addition.

Ideas to help at home :

Count out different objects from home. Discuss how many there are altogether.

Show your child how to use their fingers to help them add numbers to 10.

Use different objects that your child can place out practically to add numbers.

Ideas to help at home :

Sort toys into different categories when tidying and playing.

 

Sort out washing basket for tops, trousers and socks.

 

Sort out cutlery when putting away dishes.

 
 

October

To be able to know the names of the days of the week.

Ideas to help at home :

Share family calendars with your child, letting them know what is happening each day.

Help your child recite days of the week and months of the year.

Let them know what day it is each morning before coming to school.
