Mark making in nursery
This week we introduced foam to the children. First of all, we allowed them to explore it's texture, smell, etc. They used some lovely words to describe how the foam felt such as fluffy, smooth, soft, and light! Then we gave the children paint brushes to begin mark making. They loved using the brushes as well as their hands and fingers to make marks and patterns/lines in the foam. We extended this activity to our outdoor play by adding cars and small vehicles into the tuff tray. The children talked about the lines that the car wheels made (how many lines they could see, straight lines, wavy lines, etc), and we observed and discussed the different patterns made in the foam by the different vehicles. Look at the enjoyment on the children's faces as they explore the foam. A great introduction to early mark making, which will eventually progress onto emergent writing!
