P6 visit the YES Project

21st Nov 2024

This morning Primary 6 attended the 'YES Project' in Shantallow Community Centre. The project covers a broad range of essential safety topics aimed at educating us so that we can stay safe in a range of places and scenarios.

Fire Safety with NIFRS: We were learning how to prevent fires and how to respond if one occurs. This was really useful as the Fire Service discussed a range of potential hazards, not just fire.

Water Safety with Foyle Search and Rescue: We now understand how to stay safe around water, including swimming safety, recognising hazards, various sign post meanings and what to do in case of an emergency.

Safety Around the Home with Derry City Council: We discussed tips on avoiding accidents at home, such as handling household chemicals, using electrical appliances safely, and preventing falls or injuries. After we attended a workshop of dog safety. Most of us have pets at home so it's important we keep them safe too.

Identity Safety: We often discuss Internet Safety in class as part of our ICT lessons and this morning we investigated further the need to protect personal information online and in real life, recognising risks like identity theft, and knowing how to maintain privacy.

Anti-bullying: Last week was Anti-Bullying week in Greenhaw P.S so we took our skills from last week and used them this morning when discussing strategies to deal with bullying, how to support others, and fostering empathy and respect in social situations.

We had a great morning learning so many new skills.
