Rights Respecting School Award

Greenhaw Primary are currently working hard towards becoming a Level 2 Rights Respecting School.    The Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. A rights-respecting school not only teaches about children’s rights but also models rights and respect in all its relationships: between teachers / adults and pupils, between adults and between pupils.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights—civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention just for them because people under 18 years old often need special care and protection that adults do not. The leaders also wanted to make sure that the world recognized that children have human rights too.

Charities

As a Rights Respecting School the children and staff work together to raise money for many charities. As well as helping great causes, both locally and internationally, our pupils begin to understand the benefit of helping others. This encourages them to empathise with others in their own society and throughout the world. The fundraising this year has made our pupils aware of needs and rights on a global scale.

Some of the charities we have supported:

Ambassadors-Letter Writing

Some of our pupils took the opportunity to write letters to the First Minister and Deputy First Minister. The children expressed the importance of the UNCRC and why we are a Rights Respecting School! Have a read at the reply below
